Letter from Waves (to.2125)

2025–2026 · Jeju National Museum, Jeju

About this work

Letter from Waves (to.2125) is a sound and photography installation that asks: “Can the sounds of today remain 100 years from now?”

The work brings together field recordings, voices, photographs, and newly composed sound. A total of 102 participants from Korea and abroad recorded the sounds around them and their own voices, creating personal records of the places and moments they were living in. These recordings were then developed into original compositions and brought together with the photographs as a collective record of the present.

The installation was presented at Jeju National Museum from August 5 to 23, 2026. Visitors moved through the exhibition and activated cassette-shaped sound devices to hear individual sound fragments, experiencing places, memories, and voices within one shared space.

BARAM

2026 · M50 Creative Park, Shanghai

About this work

In Korean, BARAM (바람) means both wind and wish. The exhibition combines photographs, environmental recordings, and wordless humming collected across East Asia.

Forests, water, city streets, and coastlines appear in the photographs, while environmental recordings and humming bring the sounds of these places into the gallery. An ambient composition moves throughout the space, connecting the images and sounds.

Presented at M50 Creative Park, Shanghai, from July 15 to 29, 2026, BARAM considers how wind carries what cannot be seen, including passing sensations, distant wishes, and what remains after a moment has passed.

Time of a Drop

2026 · Zhujiajiao, Shanghai

About this work

Time of a Drop was developed during a month-long residency in Zhujiajiao, Shanghai, in July 2026. The photographs were created through ongoing observation of Zhujiajiao’s waterways, reflections, light, and movement.

The sound work was developed as a composition and sound design in response to these images. Melodic elements and environmental recordings were shaped together to create a sonic layer that moves with the mood, rhythm, and visual flow of the photographs.

The work begins with a question: When a drop of water becomes part of a larger body of water, does it feel suffocated or relieved? Time of a Drop focuses on the moment between remaining separate and becoming part of something larger, where a sense of suffocation and relief can coexist.

Waterscape

2023–2025 · Nature and Divinity, UNESCO Project, East Asia

About this work

Waterscape brings together photography and sound recordings of water from Jeju and Shanghai. The photographs focus on reflections, light, leaves, stones, and the surface of water, showing what appears above and beneath it at the same time. The sound work is based on recordings of waves from Jeju and rivers from Shanghai, together with animal sounds from Africa shared through a sound exchange with a Japanese artist. These materials were developed into a composition that connects distant places through one continuous flow.

Presented in Nature and Divinity, a UNESCO project and special exhibition of the 64th Tamna Culture Festival in Jeju in 2025, Waterscape looks at how water moves through landscapes and links places that are geographically apart.

우리의 바람을 타고 (Carried by Our Wind)

2020–2021 · Music Film with Contemporary Dance

About this work

Carried by Our Wind is a music film created in remembrance of the victims of the Jeju April 3 Incident, carrying a quiet message of comfort and healing.

I composed, performed, and produced the music in 2020, and the work was later developed into a short film in 2021 in collaboration with artists from Jeju and Daejeon.

Through contemporary dance and the blooming of camellia flowers, the work reflects on memory, loss, and the hope for peace.

The wind becomes a thread between past and present, carrying what remains forward.

Your Forest

2023 · Field Recording + Live Performance

About this work

This piece was created around the theme of healing through nature. It begins with the sound of rain falling in a forest in Jeju, layered with birdsong, flute, and piano to evoke harmony between nature and humanity.

The flute was recorded live in the forest, enhancing the immersive soundscape and capturing the breath of nature as it truly is.

The final composition delicately paints the atmosphere of Jeju’s rainy forest, offering a sense of calm and quiet purification.

Sunrise to Sunset on the Sea

2023–2024 · Photography + Sound Installation

About this work

The sea of Jeju feels like an instrument, sometimes bold and sometimes gentle. Since 2021, I have been photographing its shifting light and recording its sounds to create 12 music pieces.

This photo book pairs each image with its own music and coastal soundscape, accessible via QR code. It offers a visual and sonic journey through the sea, from sunrise to sunset.

Island 0

2021 · Music Composition for Cello and Piano

About this work

Zero(0) is a number that holds both nothingness and infinity. Like islands drifting on the sea, our inner landscapes appear and vanish with the movement of the waves.

Waves shaped by circumstances or stirred by emotion can erase familiar islands or reveal unexpected ones. At times, only gentle ripples remain, and everything rests in stillness.

The presence of waves and islands within us is a sign that life continues to flow.

This piece expresses that inner ocean through the sounds of cello, piano, and the sea.

Research

Soundscape and Artistic Creation: An Arts-Based Qualitative Study of the Jeju Coast — publication cover사운드스케이프와 예술 창작의 관계: 제주 해안을 중심으로 한 예술기반 질적연구Soundscape and Artistic Creation: An Arts-Based Qualitative Study of the Jeju Coast2025About this research

This arts-based qualitative study explores how the soundscape of the Jeju coast shapes artists’ sensory experiences and creative decisions. Interviews with musicians and visual artists are examined alongside improvisations and visual expressions.

The study traces a movement from listening and emotional response to mental imagery, and then to musical elements such as rhythm and timbre or visual elements such as lines, colours and patterns. Coastal sound emerges as a resource for shaping artistic form, interpreted differently through each artist’s bodily experience and practice.

Visual artists translated the sounds of the Jeju coast into colour through their own media.

Analysis of the Acoustic Value of Jeju Gotjawal — publication cover제주 곶자왈의 음향적 가치 분석Analysis of the Acoustic Value of Jeju Gotjawal2024About this research

This arts-based study investigates the acoustic and musical value of Jeju’s Gotjawal forests through field recordings, acoustic analysis, expert interviews and musicians’ experiences in the forest. It considers physical, psychological and ecological perspectives on the soundscape.

Fieldwork across Gotjawal areas led to a focused study at Dongbaekdongsan. The publication brings together analysis of wind and bird sounds, musicians’ accounts of listening and bodily sensation, and melodies created from their forest experiences, exploring how an acoustic environment can become a source of musical imagination.
